For Diversity. Against Racism.
The goal of the Noël- and Jacqueline-Martin-Foundation is to encourage young people to stand up for tolerance, democracy, and against racism in their everyday lives. To achieve this, the foundation primarily supports personal encounters, as well as collaborative work and learning between young people from Germany and England.
The Founder: Noël Martin
Noël Martin, a British-Jamaican entrepreneur from Birmingham, was also active in Germany in the 1990s. In 1996, right-wing extremists attacked him in his car in Blankenfelde-Mahlow, Brandenburg. As a result, he suffered complete paralysis from the neck down. In an effort to break down prejudices and promote an open and inclusive society, Noël Martin established a foundation in 2008 with the support of the state of Brandenburg. Since then, the foundation has been dedicated to promoting tolerance and democracy. On July 14, 2020, Noël Martin passed away in his hometown of Birmingham, largely due to the lasting health consequences of the 1996 attack.
On June 16, 2021, the racially motivated attack on Noël Martin marked its 25th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, the municipality of Blankenfelde-Mahlow, in cooperation with the state of Brandenburg, Opferperspektive, and numerous other organizations, hosted a week of activities. The event aimed to remember the attack while creating spaces for dialogue and encounters. A highlight of the week was the official naming ceremony of the “Noël Martin Bridge.” Each year, commemorative events are held at the memorial site to honor Noël Martin and his legacy.
The Stiftung Großes Waisenhaus zu Potsdam administers the Noël and Jacqueline Martin Foundation in a fiduciary capacity.
